How it began

The Root-Stock: My Story of Fire and Rose PetalsAfter eleven summers on this hill, it is the first deep pink buds on the Gertrude Jekyll rose that always signal the return of the light.🫜For over 11 years, I have lovingly grown these heritage David Austin roses here in my Healing Garden in Shropshire. Nurturing each root-stock until it bursts into bloom, scented, beautiful, and brightening the green, tree-laden landscape.🪴This journey happened unexpectedly eleven years ago on a sunlit March morning 2015, I arrived here following a house fire a month or so earlier in my thatched National Trust cottage in Attingham Park, Shrewsbury.Moving in an unexpected and unplanned manner from the busy hubbub of Attingham Park, where I loved to wander the wonderful deer park with its quiet nooks and crannies to the deep quiet hum of the woods of Wenlock Edge was a transition that began in necessity but gradually blossomed into my soul-calling.I had already shivered through a freezing cold month in a house with just a tarpaulin on the roof.With a gaping hole in the roof and no working heating after the fire, staying was no longer an option.I simply needed a proper roof over my head and a hearth to sit in front of to thaw out.I was exhausted, stressed out and cold to the bone.
Then, a completely unplanned move on top of that to a different area on that March day; I was still reeling from the shock of it all.Arriving in a large van with a group of kind friends to help me to move into this wild yet isolated place began as an essential refuge that soon led to a deep love affair with the soul or “spirit” (genius loci) of this sacred land.The remoteness took me time to get used to…I was lonely at first; I missed the hustle and bustle of my old home and popping next door to the local hotel for al-fresco lunch, or to Attingham Park across the road for a walk and coffee and cake at the cafe … but after a while, the isolation began to settle in my bones.The Welsh MountainsLuckily growing up in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons in Wales -Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, I am used to wild landscapes.Though the Shropshire hills are much more of a polite sister to the majestic Welsh mountains of my youth,
they welcomed me home.I began to walk this ancient land, building a deep relationship with its birds, its trees, and its hidden places.I learnt that the birdsong at dawn and dusk becomes a continuous, living prayer, needing no translation just a willingness to listen and really ‘hear’.My love for the sacred wildflowers and trees began long ago in Wales.In that era long before the internet and social media, I spent most of my days outside, wandering the Usk riverbanks and climbing trees, racing my bike along the Brecon promenade with my two doggy companions Dusty and Chip, gaily running alongside me.Now, I must tell you my healing garden is not a "prim and proper” place at all.It is a living wild sanctuary and cottage where I planted David Austin roses to scramble freely high into the trees and amongst the native, bee-laden, sweet-scented honeysuckle.🪏Butterflies, song birds and bumble bees are my main “guests” here these days,
but they seem to enjoy their visits to feast on natural pollinator-friendly plants that I have purposely left for their needs.I fell in love with the spirit and “ roots” of this land even through its challenges:the knee-high cold fog that hugs the ground for days during winter.The “dark-dark” from the absence of street lights, and the profound, beautiful remoteness of these hills and the vast Wenlock Edge woodland.The land seemed to speak to me in a way, not in words, … in feeling, … in inspiration …🕊️I began to write this Book of Days, because I wanted to mark my experience of the soul and heritage of this place lest I forget.The “Story” Cottage:
The cottage of many stories.There is a modest quarry worker's cottage here too, simply built of stone and rubble, as documented in old records I have found.I have traced the history of those who lived here over the last two hundred years; it is a treasured thing that I too, have become part of that old woven thread of lives gone before me.My Welsh heritage took me time time to get used to “being over the border”, but Shropshire too has its own unique heritage and energy.🪏The cottage was bequeathed to the National Trust by a man named Victor in 1990 but I shall tell you more of his story shortly.Victor planted the snowdrops, though they have spread in their thousands over the years.To VictorI often think of him and his generous gift of the cottage and land in spring when the humble snowdrops appear.I imagine him, much like me, enjoying the birdsong and admiring his snowdrops with a steaming cup of tea on a cold, frost-filled morning.I always hope Victor approves of my roses, wildflowers, and my thousands of hours spent tending this ‘wild place’, as in truth, I still think fondly of it as his.I sometimes think of myself as but a custodian of this land, talking across time to the souls who loved it before me..Friend, if I may call you that, my hope is that this page might inspire you, or perhaps even offer you a moment of rest in this busy world we all share.Being a romantic at heart, I always feel we are strangers only once; we are often kindred spirits through our shared love of nature and the mystery of the unseen.Wherever you are in the world, I am so glad that you are here and have stopped by for a visit to my corner of the world, albeit digitally.With blessings and grace,JulieDo wander, and if you would like, feel free to sign the guestbook and leave a message of what brought you here today.

For a time, this space was known as (Mother) Mary’s Healing Sanctuary Garden, so much so that visitors playfully began calling me Mary!
Though the name has evolved to match my own, the spirit of devotion and blessing remains unchanged.

As I mentioned, I am an ordained Interfaith (multi-faith) Minister.As this wild land became my sanctuary, it naturally evolved into the sacred backdrop for my ministry...More than a home; where nature and spirit meet without the need for walls.Since 2008, I have offered an inclusive sanctuary of deep listening, ceremony, and prayer for those seeking to enjoy their faith in a nature-based environment, or perhaps without the confines of traditional religion.I work with people seeking a deeper connection to good, regardless of personal faith or background.

I have filled my Shropshire garden with these beloved David Austin roses over the years, many arriving as gifts from family and dear friends.Most are climbers my favourite for their repeated flowering ability.They are allowed to scramble freely, climbing high into the trees and mingling with the native honeysuckle.They represent the "wild sanctuary" I have cultivated as a blend of intentional beauty and natural freedom.

The Roots of My Connection
A Child in the GardenAs a child, my world was quietly and beautifully shaped by the green spaces around me.My grandparents adored their garden, but it was my grandfather Sam who tended his flowers and hanging baskets with such immense pride and joy.I would sit for hours in that traditional space of neat lawns and structured borders, watching him roll the grass with that heavy, old lawn roller.Inside our home, the green world continued. My mum always had flower gardens outside and a house filled with plants indoors. I vividly remember the beautiful African violets and many varieties of streptocarpus sitting on the windowsills.It was during these early years that my mum first introduced me to flower remedies, gently giving me Dr Bach’s Rescue Remedy whenever life felt overwhelming.Those little bottles became quiet companions, anchoring a deep, instinctive trust in plant medicine that I would carry with me forever.The Sensory AwakeningAt age thirteen, I took my first job as a Saturday girl in the local florist shop, Buds and Blooms.Even now, the moment I walk into a florist, that unmistakable, rich scent of crushed stems and cut blooms instantly transports me back across the years to the little Welsh girl I used to be, trying to close the shop door when no-one was looking because it was so cold.I still laugh remembering how the shop owner’s husband would phone me on the shop phone, “Julie, have you got that door open? Go and open it …”Growing up in Wales in the days before the internet, my true sanctuary was the wilderness.I, too, like Dr Bach, used to wander the Welsh riverbanks for hours, sitting quietly beside the moving water just to watch, listen, and breathe.Dr Bach chose his first plant signature just a stone’s throw from my own childhood riverbank wanderings.Without realising it, I was tuning my own energy to the environment around me. I think even back then my essence connection was preparing me.The Mountain's HumLater, while living in Snowdonia, I regularly walked up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). It was during one of these walks that everything shifted.I paused to rest for a moment and catch my breath, and placed my palm against an enormous, ancient rock beside the steep path.In that exact moment, I felt it, … a deep, physical, unmistakable hum vibrating straight through the stone and into my hands.It wasn't an idea or an imagination; it was the living frequency of the mountain itself.It felt like, … I can only say … a heartbeat.That was the first time I consciously felt the vibration of the earth, but it wouldn't be the last.There are many other threads of this vibrational language woven quietly through my life, stories of water, trees, and subtle whispers that I will share with you here as time goes on.I realised then that I have always been able to feel the vibration of plants, trees, and water.It is simply a part of who I am.My Shropshire Healing GardenWhen I moved to my Shropshire healing garden in 2015, a beautiful, sheltered woodland garden full of mature trees, my lifelong connection to the land naturally bloomed into something new.I felt an undeniable call to finally start creating my own essences.I had always known that one day I would make them, but the timing had never felt right. I needed to be in the right place.The moment I stood beneath the canopy of the two ancient Black Walnut trees in my garden, I knew it was time. They were my new garden guardians. It was no coincidence that the Black Walnut was my first essence.Walnut is the great keeper of thresholds, the essence that shields our energy, breaks old anchors, and gives us the courage to step fully into our true destiny.
